Rae sits in the cafeteria lazily stirring her vanilla pudding in the plastic container. She wonders what it’s really made of. There could be cat bones inside it, or intestines. Anything sounds good with the correct marketing technique. She shoves it in her mouth anyway, thinking its best to be left ignorant. The thick custard sits her mouth as she moves her jaw up and down a couple of times before swallowing it. Her mother would have known the ingredients in pudding. Her mother would have told her one day too. Her mother would have been there for her had Rae only agreed to find a nice boy to marry, make babies and be all domesticated.
She shoves the pudding cup away, disgusted with the thought of fulfilling the role of dutiful housewife. That wasn’t her. As much as her mother wished it was, it couldn’t be. Rae didn’t have a future…not one to call her own.
She stands and exits the cafeteria, content with aimlessly wandering until she found something or someone better to distract herself with.
